Theme: Prepared Traveller Choi Bu's Drifting Experience and East Asian Viewpoint

Speaker: Cha Kwang Ho (Korea Institute of Civilizational Exchanges)

Prof. Choi maintains that Choi Bu was a "prepared traveller" in the sense that he acquired unrivaled knowledge of the broader aspects of East Asia including geography and history in the process of participating in the writing and editing Dongguk Tonggam and Dongguk Ryegi Seonglam. During his stay in China after drifting the sea, he had a chance to understand the new aspects of China, which resulted in the searching for a new identity of Chosun. According to prof. Choi, Choi Bu became a pioneer of Chosun version of China-centered world-view. Accordingly, his viewpoint of East Asia also experienced change.
