Theme: Walter Benjamin's Discourse on Urbiculture

Speaker: Lee Changnam (Hanyang University)

Through the work of Passagenwerk or Arcades Project, professor Lee leads us to reflect on the origin of the modern city and remap the urban space as the connected one in the process of reciprocal action of human and environment including collective consciousness and historical environment. He pots for a systematic approach to understand the contributing factors to the formation of the modern city from the analysis of "passage", "glass showcase", "mass", "advertisement and poster", "stock market" and "international expo". In conclusion, he asserts that the task of today is to interpret critically the bourgeoise values of the European cities underlying the non-western cities.
