Theme: Sea-port Cities, Epidemics and Public Hygiene System

Speaker: Ozaki Koji, Otemae University, Japan

Ozaki Kozi has focused on how the authorities dealt with the problem of preventing epidemics and grasped public health conditions especially in the sea-port city, Kobe, from the 19th century to the early 20th century. He also has reviewed how the modern public sanitation system had become established by the state initiative. In view of the unique circumstances confronting the modern Japan, he contends the necessity of a distinct methodology apart from western one. He has analysed out a possible new and distinctive approach in the process of explaining how Kobe had established the system of the unique hygiene system.
