Theme: City Maps in Premodern and Modern Times - The West and East Asia

Speaker: Hasegawa Koji (Kobe University)

Prof. Hasegawa's speech has not only covered a broad span of space, the East and the West but also ranged over all period in history from the prehistoric age and modern era. He has instantiated how each map disclose the feature and differentiate itself. Through maps of cities, he has critically examined the significance of modernity to both the individual and society. Prof. Hasegawa has continued to explain how the traditional city map in the East Asian world experienced transfiguration confronting modern times and what was to be meant.
